What You Need To Know

Are breast augmentation and breastfeeding mutually exclusive? Is it even possible to breastfeed with implants? This is a common concern. As with any medical procedure, there are no absolutes. However, most breast implants are inserted underneath the pectoral muscle and thus do not affect the internal structure of the breast. The ducts remain attached to the nipple, and the majority of patients will therefore be able to breastfeed.

Generally, if the patient was able to breastfeed before augmentation, she will most likely be able to breastfeed once fully healed after the procedure.

Are There Adverse Effects of Breastfeeding with Implants?

In 2006, after 15 years of studying the possibility of silicone leaking into breast milk, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) determined that silicone gel was safe to use for implants. There is no evidence that breastfeeding with either saline or silicone implants has an adverse effect on the baby.
