Get Over Gynecomastia and Get Out There!

Even those of us who eagerly await the summer season might experience a crisis of confidence when it comes to donning a bathing suit and hitting the beach. This is especially true of any fellas who have been diagnosed with a condition called gynecomastia, commonly known as “man boobs.”

If you’re in this camp, there is no need to miss out this summer. In fact, following a consultation with Dr. Sterling, we’re sure you’ll feel confident to get out there, grinning and bearing a firmer, smoother chest in the process.

What is Gynecomastia?

A common enough condition, gynecomastia is not life threatening; however, it can be a significant source of embarrassment, occasionally accompanied by pain in the breast tissue.

According to Mayo Clinic, gynecomastia is “an increase in the amount of breast gland tissue in boys or men, caused by an imbalance of the hormones estrogen and testosterone. Gynecomastia can affect one or both breasts, sometimes unevenly.”

Gynecomastia can present in boys as young as newborns, as well as teenagers and older men. In some cases, gynecomastia will resolve on its own, particularly when it comes to infants and pubescent adolescents. For those cases that don’t — an average of one in four men between the ages of 50-69 is affected — gynecomastia can be treated with medications and, if necessary, cosmetic surgery.

Causes of Gynecomastia

While hormones are to blame for the condition itself, certain other factors can play a role. These include various medications, the use of drugs and/or alcohol, certain medical conditions, and even some herbal products have been cited as potential causes of gynecomastia.

Treatment Options for Gynecomastia

Although there are medications to address the appearance of gynecomastia in men and boys, a more permanent solution is a surgical procedure known as reduction mammaplasty or simply, gynecomastia surgery. By surgically reducing the size of the mammary gland and removing excess glandular tissues, including fat and extra skin, this procedure reduces the size and shape of male breasts for a firmer look and feel.
